On June 13, 2019, Kenya Markets Trust supported the Nanyuki Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO) in launching 100-day service improvement targets as a commitment to improving access to safe and quality water to the people of Nanyuki. These 100-day targets were derived from their recently drafted five-year Strategic Plan 2019-2023, as an initial step towards accomplishing the ambitious targets set out by the water utility.
Speaking during the event, the Managing Director of NAWASCO, Eng. Kennedy Gitonga praised the staff for their dedication to their work. Additionally, he highlighted the opportunity that the new strategic plan and short-term goals present towards making NAWASCO the ‘premiere utility in excellent service delivery.’
“Each one of us is not just an employee of NAWASCO, but rather we are all shareholders of this company. In light of this, I urge us all to make a personal decision in raising the profile of this company to higher heights,” said Eng. Gitonga.
A reduction in the amount of non-revenue water, increased focus on customer engagement and satisfaction, as well as increased efficiency in the production, distribution and billing of water, are some of the key performance indicators which will be tracked over the 100-day period which began on June 10, 2019.
The water utility was recently rated as the best water utility in the northern region and was ranked among the top five water utilities amongst the 88 existing ones, in the recent Impact Report released by the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB).
“Laikipia county has committed to the creation of about 30,000 jobs within the current strategic period and an increase in the minimum household income to KES 600 per day. The availability of safe, affordable and quality water is key in enabling the county government to meet these targets, especially through the manufacturing sector,” said the County Executive Committee Member for Water, Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Njenga Kahiro, who was the Chief Guest.
Our Work in the Water Sector
Access to water and sanitation services was identified as a basic human right by the United Nations General Assembly on July 28, 2010. This right is also backed by the Kenyan constitution and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As such, water utility companies play a pivotal role in providing this basic human right to the populations they serve.
Through funding from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and Gatsby Africa, Kenya Markets Trust works with water service providers to improve their efficiency and service delivery, creating value for the organisations and the populations they serve.
