Webinar Summary Details
Event: Webinar on Sustainability for Water and Sanitation Services During and Post COVID-19
Date: Thursday, September 3rd, 2020
Time : 10AM to 12PM EAT.
Location: Online
Introduction
COVID-19 has created unprecedented challenges which call for innovative and ingenious ways of reviving the economy. The recently released report by McKinsey dubbed “Reopening and Reimagining Africa” indicate that African countries need to find smart approaches to reopen economies in a calibrated way that brings key industries back into operation while ensuring safe ways of working. The COVID-19 crisis will likely persist for some time, and there is a serious risk of a resurgence in infections. Accordingly, governments will need to build the capacity to alternate between reopening and restricting economies on a granular, local level—akin to developing and flexing a muscle.
The water sector has not been immune from the impact of COVID-19, which we are well aware of. Additionally, as essential services, water, sanitation and hygiene services have played a critical role in stopping the spread of the virus. Handwashing with water and soap has been used as a primary non-pharmaceutical option in halting the spread of the COVID virus.

Progress in sustaining Water-related COVID-19 dialogue
Over the last few weeks there has been a number of webinars organized by KEWASNET, WaterAid and recently by CoG to discuss the impact of COVID-19 to water sector. These platforms have provided useful data and information related to WASH and C-19. To take this conversation to the next level, and in the light of the huge resources requirement for sustained and inclusive service delivery, Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF), through the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, and in collaboration with the Kenya Markets Trust, together with the County leadership and other key stakeholders and Sector players, is organizing for a webinar themed “Pathways to sustainability for water and sanitation services in the new normal”, which will help the sector stakeholders and practitioners to pose and look into the future of water services delivery, i.e., the path to recovery, suitability and increased access to consumers.
Value proposition in focusing on recovery and sustainability
The proposed webinar aims to marshal the sector players to dialogue on sustainable solutions that would see the return to normalcy and measures to be adopted to sustain water services in the country. This webinar will focus on financing, regulation, turn-around strategies and policies bringing together experts and participants from the national and county governments, development partners and civil society, all of whom are either duty bearers or key players in the effort to put the sector into perspective during the new normal.
This webinar will be hosted through a virtual platform with participants required to register ahead of the session to facilitate an accurate capture of the attendance register. The selected presenters will prepare 7 to 10 minutes PowerPoint Presentations which will inform subsequent deliberations by the participants. The webinar will be moderated by WSTF and Kenya Markets Trust, and will run for 2 hours inclusive of presentations and plenary discussion.
